Carretera · Stage 3 · 80 Kilometres See map
Stage passing through the fertile meadowlands bordering the River Guadiana and the Roman city of Mérida to then climb gently among dehesa wooded pastureland to the Sierra de Montánchez.
The route starts out along the inseparable N-630 until reaching the outskirts of Mérida, where traffic becomes heavier.
On the ring road or main road to Madrid, take the Avenida de Portugal at the first roundabout, 3rd exit, which leads directly down to the stone footbridge, via which you cross the river. If you continue straight on, you can visit the old town. The track takes you left around the city, to the esplanade of the “Aqueduct of Miracles” and, from there, to the road to Proserpina.
You can cross over the historical dam, although the trail is a dirt road. The road that links up with the N-630 is in disrepair, with large potholes, but these are not such an obstacle when passing on a bike.
At the top of Las Herrerías hill, you head for Alcuéscar, a village overlooking a vast territory from its privileged position in the Sierra de Montánchez. Head up to the Plaza de España along Calle Real.
